Sick of going out on a Friday night to see four dudes play to a mosh pit full of dudes, only to be replaced by another slightly rowdier band of dudes playing to a slightly rowdier moshpit of dudes and so on, like a cock-rock Russian doll?
Well we have the show for you! Come see some of Melbournes finest up-and-coming female-fronted bands in the first of our Frontwomxn fundraisers, raising funds for a project to help emerging female musicians professionally record, mix and promote!!
The young Melbourne music scene is incredibly vibrant and diverse, with new talented and unique acts breaking through into national and international markets every year (Courtney Barnett, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Camp Cope etc.). We believe part of what makes our scene so vibrant and unique is the plethora of talented and creative female (and gender queer) artists who are unafraid of innovative music, creating original sounds that stand out among the traditional all male four pieces that are so typical in independent music. Despite the domination of female artists in pop music, and the number of breakthrough female independent artists in recent years, women in rock music remain heavily outnumbered and face a constant battle against sexism from fans, media and industry. This is especially true of young, emerging artists who are still figuring out their music and their place in the industry.
With this in mind, the RTR team have come up with ‘Frontwomxn’, a project centred on supporting some of Melbourne’s most talented young, emerging female musicians or female fronted bands. The project will begin by selecting 10 artists and sending them into recording with the labels resident student sound engineer Fergus Nash, who will professionally record, mix and master one track per band. We then plan to release all 10 tracks on a compilation titled ‘Frontwomxn’ on cd, vinyl and all major online stores, with an official launch gig at one of Melbourne’s many local venues (e.g. The Tote, The Gasometer, The Toff, Workers Club). Each band will also team up with a young student film maker to create a low budget film clip for their single. We hope that giving 10 emerging artists a professionally recorded single, with an accompanying film clip, media release, gig, online distribution and hardcopy music, will aid in expanding their fan base and broaden their networks and musical horizons.
